Copart Milestones: Mary Volz Celebrates 10 Years at Copart

Mary Volz began her career at Copart in March of 2008 at Yard 6 in San Jose, California. Her continued dedication has been a true asset to Copart. In those ten years, she has worked to provide an unmatched experience to Copart buyers and sellers. In addition to her contributions, Mary has found her place among her Copart team: “Hitting the 10-year mark at Copart makes me feel rooted. I feel like I am where I belong,” said Mary.

In honor of her milestone, we sat down with Mary to learn more about how her commitment to challenge the norm, be an owner and act with integrity has been a driving force to her accomplishments at Copart.

Q. What accomplishments would you like to highlight during your time at Copart?
“During my first year at Copart, I won the regional R.A.C.E award.”

Q. What has been your most memorable moment while working at Copart?
My most memorable moment at Copart was my promotion from a Customer Service Representative to an Office Supervisor. I worked very hard to achieve that goal and I was elated to move forward in my career.”

Q. What do you enjoy most about working at Copart?
“I enjoy the people! At Copart, we are truly a family. I enjoy coming to work every day and having the opportunity to help our team grow. I also like how Copart celebrates their people with Family Fun Days, employee recognition, birthday celebrations, etc.”

Corporate Real Estate Intern (Dallas, TX)

Copart is currently seeking a Corporate Real Estate Intern to join their team at our headquarters in Dallas, TX for the spring and summer 2018 semesters. This individual must be highly-organized, comfortable with public speaking, possess strategic decision-making abilities and be passionate about corporate real estate, development and acquisition.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Research predetermined critical markets and analyze all aspects of each potential acquisition.

Offsite Operations Manager (Davenport, IA)

Copart is looking for a customer service industry leader to manage the operations of our two call centers and two customer transaction centers located in Eldridge, IA. This position will manage 70+ team members to meet customer needs while maintaining company standards for policy, quality and service. This person must be goal-oriented, innovative and effective in implementing policies. This position will be based out of our Iowa corporate office.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  •  Review revenue and costs on a monthly basis for accuracy and opportunities.
  • Build relationships with members and sellers to manage customer satisfaction.
  • Hire, train and develop staff to meet company guidelines; providing direction to the team regarding duties and goals.
  • Responsible for overall management of the day-to-day operations of the facility including staff management and customer and employee issues as needed.

QA Mobile Engineer (Dallas, TX)

Minute Monday: Top Tips for Graphic Designers

Ever wonder what it takes to be a successful member of Marketing and Creative Departments? Need some advice on what to do and how to showcase your skills in the creative world as an emerging professional? Our own expert here at Copart, Senior Art Director Darren Nylec, offers advice in a minute or less!

The process: To be a successful and productive member on the Creative team…

  1. Ask as many questions as possible to avoid multiple revisions.
  2. Samples/doodles clients have of their vision helps you understand what it is that they really want.
  3. Know what final format is needed for production (web or print) and who the vendor is to contact for any questions.
  4. Have approved copy first to help drive design and layout.
  5. Follow the Creative Brief the Marketing owner fills out for the designer.
  6. Follow any brand guidelines and/or style guide to keep a consistent look.
  7. Submit for approval/revisions.
  8. Supply final files in appropriate formats and admire your content from afar!

Creative career advice:

  1. You can be a self-taught good designer, although most often you can tell the difference with someone who has a formal design education.
  2. Remain humble. You’ll consistently run into constructive criticism from your peers and clients. Creative is subjective; you will find a balance.
  3. Try to control realistic deadlines you give yourself and that others give you. (Unless you like working 20 hours/day!)
  4. Learn both print production processes and web development aspects—a hybrid designer has a much more lucrative career.
  5. Know the critical design and production programs—mainly the whole Adobe Creative Suite. Outside of formal classes, the best way to learn is to shoulder surf on someone with experience.
  6. Build a current professional portfolio, whether it’s online, print or both.
  7. If interviewing a potential client and they say they want to include their cat in the design. Bail. If they say they want the design to POP, Bail. If they can only afford $XX for a complete redesign/new brand, you can do better.

Get results: from internship to full-time family member

Meet Nicholas Cochran! Nicholas will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Software Engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas and is now a part of the Copart family as a new full-time employee. Nicholas began with Copart as an intern for the IT department in software engineering.  Through Copart’s strong IT internship program, Nicholas experienced and performed real-world work.  While an intern with Copart, he grew into a professional ready to take on challenges, effectively contributed to his team, and received an offer to join the department as a full-time employee.

Previously, Nicholas had only done projects with smaller companies; however, by interning with Copart, he had his first experience with organized and professional software engineering within a large international company.  Nicholas’s career goals include having his own business while continuing his role as a Copart Auctions Developer. For fun, Nicholas develops a wide range of products, from Video Games to an Artificially Intelligent Digital Assistant.

Nicholas offers advice and insight into his internship experience, his time with Copart, and the value he found in interning with the company:

When you were looking for an internship in your department, what made you choose Copart?

Initially, I chose Copart because I heard from a friend, who is a former employee, that a lot of influential people visited the company. This made me want to apply because it validated to me that Copart is a serious company. I then decided to stay with Copart because of the professional atmosphere as well as Copart’s financial stability.

What is the most valuable part of your internship with Copart?

The most valuable part of my internship was being forced to learn about new technologies that I would have never learned about on my own. This knowledge is extremely valuable to my other projects and to my current position at Copart.

What is one way in which you have grown/ learned something new during your internship with Copart?

The biggest ways I have grown comes from learning about new unheard of technologies as well as working with an organized Software Engineering department.

What advice would you give to college students who are looking for an internship in your field?

Above all, don’t settle for a company. Smaller companies may give you unrealistic expectations of how software engineering is done at a professional level.  You could most likely be stuck on production support instead of something you really want to do, like product development.

What is one of your favorite memories while interning with Copart?

My favorite memory was answering challenging questions asked by Copart’s most talented developers before I even started. I knew then that Copart was serious about its software engineering and that it was a great company to work for.

How do you feel Copart has equipped you to enter the “real world” after you graduate from college?

Even though I have just recently joined the team as a full time employee, the skills and experience I developed working in a professional software engineering environment helped boost me into a career as a software engineer. Copart’s internship program really supported the development of the skills I need to start a career as a professional software developer.

Anything else you want to share with others about your internship experience?

Copart was very flexible with my schedule as an intern while still expecting a certain level of work from me. The work-life balance is right at the sweet spot so that I am not too stressed about the internship, but I am still actively engaged, learning a lot, and doing a lot of meaningful work.
