Copart Employee Spotlight: Robert Green

Robert GreenRobert Green

Title: General Manager, San Diego

Nickname: Rob

Hometown: Riverside, CA

Years working with Copart: 4

What brought you into the field you are working in?
Luck. I feel I am very fortunate to be working at such a great company.  I started my career in retail management at Sam’s Club, working various management positions and learning operations management.  After completing my MBA, I applied to Copart for a GM position in San Bernardino, CA and spent 12 months there before being promoted to San Diego as GM where I have spent the last three years. I enjoy my position as General Manager, it is both challenging and rewarding.

What’s your favorite part about working at Copart?
First and foremost, my team. I have amazing employees who come to work every day, they understand their roles and responsibilities and they make our facility extremely successful- without them I am nothing. Secondly, the opportunities that Copart can provide all of us. If we want to travel, join project teams, PCI teams, promote into management and grow with our company- the opportunity is always there.

You’re stuck in an elevator- name three famous people (dead/alive) you would want to be stuck with:
Jesus, FDR and Jack Welch.

What career advice would you give someone that is starting off in your field?
Have grit, serve as a manager and never stop learning. Grit is passion and perseverance in reaching long-term goals. Grit is strength of character. Grit is sticking with your goals, day in and day out- not just for the week, not just for the month, but rather for years, and working hard to make your goals a reality. When we serve our teams, our employees, they will trust you and work hard to reach our goals. Lastly, always be a student of the business you are in- the ability to learn is not fixed, it can change with your effort.

What is your favorite memory at Copart?
I think the CAT duties are the best memories for me. During the QCSA integration on Chicago we worked in a -30 degree blizzard doing yard inventory- it was quite the experience.  On these teams I learn a great deal about our operations and build lasting relationships within the Copart family- we have some amazing people working alongside us.

How does your work help Copart buyers, sellers or the industry as a whole?
At the yards the employees are the face of the company. We want to provide the best experience we can for our members and sellers- we want to show them why we are the best at what we do. I have been fortunate to be on some teams for Copart such as the SPEAR team which focused on the culture development of the company for all facilities. On the GM Mentor team I am helping to develop the future leaders of Copart, and I hope to make a positive impact on each individual I interact with and make them great managers and leaders. I have been promoting many employees into leadership positions lately, and it feels great to give back to those who work hard at my yard- it is rewarding to see them succeed!

If applicable, what college did you attend?
University of Redlands, MBA 2011. University of California (Riverside), BA 2005.

What is one of your bucket list items?
Skydiving for sure….

What are you binge watching right now?
My favorite was Breaking Bad, just finished Mad Men, and now Orange is the New Black.

Favorite sports team: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, or Anaheim Angels, or California Angels….

Favorite vehicle: Audi R8

What is one interesting fact about you?
I enjoy teaching and I am a part time professor at National University – School of Business and Marketing.
